Tokomairiro District Celebrate 160 years of Education

This was a celebration of 160 years of formal education in the Tokomairiro District, including 50 years since Tokomairiro District High School split to Milton Primary School and Tokomairiro High School.
The celebration started on Friday evening, with lots of reminiscing, and with shouts of delight when reunited with classmates and staff.
Milton Schools were open on Saturday morning, and many took advantage to have a look through at the changes since ‘their day.’  The formalities started at 1.30pm with a rousing waiata from THS kapa haka group, and songs from Milton Primary School choir.  The charming and entertaining former pupil and TV news presenter, Samantha Hayes, was MC.  Both current principals, Glenis Sim, and Tania McNamara spoke, and THS Head Prefects, Eliza Barrett and Kane Bassett.  Guest speakers were Sir Richard Hayes, who recounted his work, rescue, and adventure as a helicopter pilot; and former teacher Elizabeth Jack, nee Flett, gave a humorous account of life and work after her arrival in the district as a 21 year old.  Former THS teacher, Melva Bradshaw, and Milton Primary new entrant, Liv Schiller cut the cake made and decorated by Jennifer Bransgrove.  Plaques on original stones from the old stone school building were unveiled.  This was followed by the obligatory photos, in glorious sunshine.
At dinner at night, guest speaker Samantha Hayes spoke fondly about growing up in Milton and her path to reading the news on TV3’s News Hub.  The night ended with music and dancing to Wayne and the Good Old Boys or a quieter catch up at another venue.
For those with any energy left, there was a BBQ on Sunday at lunch time.  Judging by the comments on social media, a great time was had by all, and many were sorry they were not able to be part of a great weekend.
Congratulations and thanks to the Committee for the effort and hard work which certainly paid off.
